Tony Riley

Senior HR Consultant

My Experience

I started working life in retail Banking in the UK and quickly realised that banking wasn’t for me. The Union where I was working (now UNITE) persuaded the Bank to second me to work for them with a national negotiating and employment relations role that included the Channel Islands.

My career then accelerated when I became Employee Relations Lead for Bart’s Hospital, London, where I also acquired a Diploma in Employment Law, a Masters Degree in HR strategy and completed  a Harvard Leadership Programme in Boston. In 2002, I was appointed as Executive HR Director at Derby Hospital and joined the UK National HR Capacity Board where I was lucky to work alongside Dave Ulrich for a couple of years.

During my time at Derby I qualified as a 6 Thinking Hats Practitioner, and memorably co-presented at a conference with Edward De Bono, the creator of the programme—a career highlight.

Derby is also the UK home of Toyota, the global leader in LEAN where I gained my Lean Green Belt.

After leaving the NHS and before coming to Jersey, I ran my own HR consultancy business for three years, specialising in covering HR Director vacancies, as a strategic Board adviser and in transforming HR teams.

I came to Jersey full time in 2011 as HR Director for the HR department for Health and Social Services, where I stayed for seven years, before joining HR Now.

I am now mainly based in the UK but continue to support and advise a number of high profile Jersey and Guernsey clients, both remotely and on island when needed..

My Specialisms

Over the years I have developed a successful track record as a Board level strategist, in managing organisational change, including redundancy programmes, mergers, outsourcing and TUPE transfers, delivering management and leadership development schemes, and can boast a 100% success rate in defending Respondents in Employment & Discrimination Tribunals.

What can we do for you?

We have seen a rising need to help our clients avoid and defend Tribunal claims, and identified a real need to develop and deliver management training focused on people management and communication, as well as team building programmes and providing mediation services.

What makes me Smile?

I have grown up children and three grandsons, am a keen SCUBA diver, a competitive pub quizzer, an excellent cook, an avid reader, a movie buff and theatre goer. I also love walking—and try to do about 80 miles most weeks.
