Becky Hill started working with International Energy Group’s (IEG) management team when the business was about to restructure across all three of its locations: Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

That was three years ago. Since then, Becky has acted as IEG’s HR Director and become a member of the senior management team, helping the leading natural gas and LPG distribution and supply business to go from strength to strength.

Following the restructure, Becky initially provided all the necessary HR requirements of running a cross-location business. Now, members of the HR Now team provide support on areas such as the firm’s graduate recruitment programme, pensions and modifying handbooks and contracts.

And, on Becky’s own initiative, mangers and personal assistants within IEG have been trained to undertake HR admin in-house, leaving her free to focus on strategic priorities.

“Becky’s strategic counsel on personnel matters for our 230 plus staff, and ongoing advice during our weekly management calls, is invaluable,” explains Tony. “That’s where her true value lies, and what she has structured the business to receive.” 

Becky also visits the business on a regular basis, and attends social functions, which Tony believes is really important in maintaining a good working relationship.

But what Tony admires most is that Becky understands what the businesses needs to deliver and helps to navigate a path to their desired objectives.

independent advice helps the business grow strong

Six years ago, Mike Rogers, managing director of Summit Group CI, the holding company for leading independent wine merchants AC Gallie and Love Wine, was managing HR issues alone.

“When running a small business, handling staff issues can sometimes become too difficult to do by yourself,” explains Mike. “Especially when it comes to navigating employment law.”

So when Mike met Becky at a Chamber of Commerce lunch, they got talking and he asked Becky to help out. Becky has been providing counsel ever since.

Becky’s support was never more important when the business went through a merger over two and half years ago.

“When going through such dramatic change in the business, tensions can, and do, run high,” explains Mike. “Having Becky alongside as independent counsel and talking to staff directly ensured emotions didn’t get in the way, which was extremely valuable.”

These days, Becky remains Mike’s go to person for staff related issues, continuing to provide services on a non fixed fee basis.

“Of course Becky alerts us to new legislation and how that will impact our business when needs be, but I don’t want to have to worry that someone is simply clocking up activities to meet an agreed fee every month or, worse, creating more work than necessary,” says Mike. “And that’s exactly what I get from Becky, advice and support as and when I need it, as well as the guidance to do things ourselves.”

But what’s perhaps even more important to Mike is to get on well with the people he works with.

“I value Becky’s efficiency, her down to earth approach and that I always know where I am and what I am going to get,” he explains. “But, more importantly, we get on personally and have a really good rapport. It’s good to have friends in business.”

So what does the future hold in store for Love Wine? “We are going from strength to strength, and the business is growing,” says Mike. “I am confident that, as we do, Becky will help to keep the team on track, and will always be there when we need her most.”
