Starting a new job is a bit like dating—you’re both figuring out if it’s a good match. That’s where the probation period comes in. It’s not just a formality; it’s a smart, structured way for both the employer and the employee to test the waters before diving in long-term.

For Employers: A Built-In Safety Net

Think of it as a trial run. Employers get a chance to see if the new hire really walks the talk. Are they achieving objectives hitting their targets ? Do they mesh well with the team? Are they bringing the right energy, is their attendance/punctuality acceptable?

If things aren’t quite clicking, the probation period gives employers  flexibility to either extend the trial and some flexibility in respect of parting ways with less fuss than a full-blown termination process - but always take expert advice first! It’s also a time when some benefits might be on hold—like the amount of paid leave or entitlement to sick pay—so there’s less financial risk if things don’t work out.

For Employees: A Chance to Feel Things Out

It’s not just about proving yourself—it’s also your time to decide if this job is your kind of vibe. Do you like the culture? Is the workload what you expected? Are you getting the support you need?

You’ll usually get regular feedback during this time, which is great for growth. And if all goes well, passing probation often unlocks perks like a pay bump or access to more benefits.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

    • Get it in writing: Always make sure your contract spells out the probation terms clearly—how long it lasts, what’s expected, and what happens at the end.
    • Feedback is your friend: Whether you’re the boss or the newbie, use this time to talk openly about what’s working and what’s not – so, meet. talk and make a file note.
  • Don’t ghost the process: If you’re an employer, make sure to formally confirm IN WRITING when someone passes or fails probation. It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
